The Madame is where we have some room to trim away the time, but god do I love watching Kem submit – almost as much as I love watching Mara get jealous when she sees another woman expressing any form of ownership over Kem. Plus, there’s something to be said of clearcut sadism in a savage land. (The kitchen in Legend, with its cooks hooded like executioners in leather aprons, puts me in mind of a dungeon.)
The Madame is a little crazy. Sycophantic to Mara, she screamingly dominates everyone else. Extremely slender, she seems to subsist only on the delicious pain of her slaves, who are all male. The Madame is a female supremacist who thrives in and on darkness.
I have a fantasy about the Madame wearing a mask of crystals or chains, but I imagine it would be difficult to animate. I like the idea of her appearing as a depraved, mad version of blind justice.
